At the Last Shore

Part 13•Page 1 of 14

The machine was already humming under Elias's hand when Mara caught his wrist.

The chamber's white walls flashed with slow red bars from the containment alert. Smoke still hung in the air from the conduit fire, thin now but sharp enough to scrape his throat raw when he breathed too deep. The freed machine stood on its platform in the center of the room, rings nested inside rings, old metal and newer grafts trembling with stored charge. Elias had one boot on the foot rail, his side braced hard against the pain that came with any twist.

"No," Mara said.

She did not raise her voice. She stood close enough that he could see soot ground into the lines of her palms from forcing doors and pulling cable. Her knife was gone, put away somewhere, but she looked no less dangerous without it. "You don't know if it comes back from this. You don't know what it's doing to the field."

"That's why I need the test." His words came rough through the cough he swallowed back. He tapped the control plate with his wrapped hand, wincing when the cloth pulled against the cut. "A short forward verification. Minutes here, if the brake holds. I need to know whether this system"—he glanced at the archive doors, at the proof core in his satchel, at everything this buried world had made of comfort and fear—"is the end state or a bend in the road."

Mara stared at him as if deciding whether to drag him off by force. "And if it doesn't bring you back?"
