Mara killed her light and the dark changed shape at once.

One second, a thin blue wash lit the wet trunks and hanging root mats. The next, the conduit turned into depth and drip and the dim green pulse of algae buried in old bark. The air was warmer here than the machine tunnels behind them, damp enough to stick to the back of his throat. He followed the sound of Mara’s steps more than the sight of her, one hand on the slick wall, the other gripping the satchel strap across his chest so it would not slap his bruised ribs.

“Keep your feet where mine go,” Mara said. Her voice stayed low, flat, carrying just enough to reach him. “These channels look dead. Some still drop.”

She moved ahead through a stand of pale trunks as thick as old pipes, grown in rows too orderly to be natural. Cracked irrigation gutters ran between them, half full of black water and long threads of fungus. Overhead, dead spray arms hung like broken limbs. It had once been a managed air farm, a sealed lung for the upper districts, with trees engineered for fast growth, root filtration, and heat exchange. Now the place had gone half wild and half machine, and every surface held the mark of use long after official use had ended.
